JS Bach was mostly known for his organ playing during his life time, not so much for his composing which is ironic because he played his own compositions. His influence and popularity was not as great after his death, as was the case with the likes of Mozart and Beethoven, until Mendelssohn picked up some his work nearly a hundred years later and began to perform Bachs works himself.
