Yes, it's an obvious influence. Spice Girls fanbase are obviously too young to have ever heard "Things Can Only Get Better" by Howard Jones. I take it that was the idea. I suspect that the guys who wrote the Spice Girls music for them decided it would make a good intro to their record so they ripped it off!
