Yes!! I'm not entirely knowledged on music history, so I'm not entirely sure how far back it goes or what the first 'ancestory' really was. However, I do know of two instruments that pre-dated the piano: the organ and the harpsichord.

Most people are fairly familiar with the organ, but the harpsichord isn't very common. It was very popular in the time of Bach, and he wrote many pieces for the harpsichord. It has a sort-of twang sound to it, and the instrument plucks the strings when a key is played, I believe.

The problem with a harpsichord is that it has one constant dynamic level. When the piano e forte was invented, it became incredibly popular because it could be soft and loud (hence it's name).

I'm sure if you looked up the organ and harpsichord, you'll find lots more information on those instruments as well as what pre-dated those. Happy searching!!

Hope this helps!! =)
