Keith Moon (The Who's drummer) did all kind of strange things on stage, kicking his drums over etc. at some time i dare say he would have used some kind of pyrotechnics, i doubt if they would have actually exploded as this could have caused serious injury to both Kieth, the rest of the band and audience. I recall seeing an exploding kit once but it was a mock up for a film/promo video but no one was playing it at the time.
Yes having checked YouTube there is footage of the Who on an American TV show when Keith had explosives put in the bass drum, he sadly miss-calculated the amount and when it detonated Pete Townsend took the full blast causing permanent damage to his hearing.
