In 1978 Marsalis attended the Julliard School of Music, but after two years he left to join the Jazz Messengers, and he studied under the group's leader, Art Blakey. In 1981, he began touring with Herbie Hancock, by which time he had no intention of continuing formal education, because he was already playing with and learning from the best.

He does, however, have numerous honorary doctorate degrees and other recognitions from Brandeis University, Brown University, Columbia University, Denison University, Harvard University, John Hopkins University, the Manhatten School of Music, New York University, Northwestern University, Princeton University, the University of Miami, Southern Methodist University and Yale University.
