The big difference: One has frets and the other doesn't!

Other differences:

1) fretted bass is easier to play in tune

2) fretless bass gets a smoother sound, and glissandos are also smoother

3) It doesn't matter what strings you use on fretted, but on fretless "round wound" strings will chew up your fingerboard

4) The type of wood you choose for the fingerboard on your fretless will change the tone, but won't make a difference on your fretted bass

i think that a fretted bass it's better. with it fretts the notes can be hitted with more exactitude.

think of it as a person who have never had a watch and want to learn to see time out of it, it would be easier to start with a watch with all the numbers than one that does not have them

The fretless doesn't have frets. It is played like a cello. The sound created is more dull and some styles of music sound better that way.

You have to know where to put your fingers to create the right note; there's no frets to help you, and you can end up sounding quartertones instead of semitones.
