Yes they can, I was bitten in Costa Rica but I believe its intention was to keep from falling when it was hanging from My arm. I was removing it from a road. Its best to pick them up from behind with on hand under each of his arms. The bite bled pretty good. And consisted of two puncture wounds about an inch apart. It really did not hurt to bad for long just when it latched a hold of me. I cleaned it thoroughly with soap and water and applied antibiotic ointment. So far I have not had a desire to clime trees and eat leaves. But My girlfriend says I am moving slower.
