It has been recorded by several artistes but the classic and perhaps best known was by Wink Martindale - the Song is entitled "Deck of Cards" Although as you mention OLD you might have meant earlier recordings so Tex Ritter or even Hank Williams senior might be the singer you were thinking of, the song has through the years had many re - workings. Apparently it can be traced back to the late 18th century. It has also had various other titles one of which was "The Soldiers Almanac, Bible and Prayerbook".
