Update March 2011:
Monster Guitarist Randall Padilla (currently under Guinness review, Claim ID#232300) plays a blistering 23.5 nps (notes per second). See the video of him playing 6 notes per beat at various metronome settings, all the way up to 235 X 6 notes per beat = 1410 npm (notes per minute) which equals the 23.5 notes per second on the YouTube link in the related links section below.
The guitarist currently holding the official Guinness world record for being the fastest guitarist in the world that is being challenged by Padilla is Tiago Della Vega of Brazil, who broke the world record by playing Flight of the bumblebee at 320 bpm in an official record attempt in 2008. Tiago Della Vegas' "Bumblebee Flight" is at max 21.3 nps- (320 bpm X 4 notes per beat; 16th note groupings = 1280 notes in 1 minute, divide by 60 seconds = 21.3 nps). See the related links also for a video of his record setting playing.
