However boy groups have existed since the 19th century as Capellas, a group, usually a trio, of men or boys who would sing in 4-part harmonies. They were often found in Italian barbers as entertainment for the customers.

This is a matter of dispute. The Osmonds, Jackson 5, and Beatles could certainly be seen as the first. In the current form that boy bands are typically known, Menudo could be seen as the first.

Some people only use the term "boy band" to refer to 90s bands - N'Sync, Backdoor Boys, etc. - those bands followed on the heels of New Kids On the Block.
