He was signed to Okeh Records, a division of Columbia, although he switched to the parent company soon after releasing his first couple of singles.

Initially, he had wanted to sign up to Capitol, but was put off them by the fact that some of it's executives were racially prejudiced, and discouraged him from using black singers on backing vocals.
