Short version of Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata #20 in A Major
Schubert wrote for many instruments, but his piano works are particularly popular. Listen to his Impromptu No.4 in Ab and you'll understand why he's a great piano writer. Schubert also wrote for the voice ... several operas and scores of "lieder" (songs).
While the classical era brought more instrumental compositions opposed to compostitions from the baroque era, Franz Schubert achieved fame for his German art songs for voice and piano and there is a lasting quality to Schubert's work that reaches out over the ages which few composers have matched.
Mozart wrote 18 complete keyboard sonatas for the "piano" of his time (which was not, strictly speaking, the modern pianoforte). There is also a traditional "19th" sonata which consist of two separate works usually performed as a complete sonata. You can find all 19 of them, chronologically, in both MIDI and MP3 form at: http://www.sdrodrian.com/mozart/sonatas/
Many of Schubert's works such as the Trout Quintet gained instant popularity. His piano sonatas were under-appreciated because Beethoven was regarded as the 'developer' of the genre. Anyhow, they got their popularity only after 19th century.
