Whitney sang in the choir of her church, and later, she too sang some back-up vocals for other artists, as early as 1977. But based on how she dealt with her fame, it appears that she was never really "ready" for success, and instead of it making her happy, it contributed to her becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol. Of course, we cannot blame her descent into addiction on being famous, but it does seem that she was not well-equipped to handle being a star, despite watching her famous mom and having her own experience with singing when she was young.
