that's very debatable. a guitar is actually just another stinged instrument with a sound hole. and those go hundreds of years back i believe. cello, violin and even the upright bass are very old. so if you mean an actuall stringed instrument that is held and played like modern Guitars that could be as early as 15th-16th century. hope this helps
