Before the term "rock and roll" came into common use, this genre of music was often called "rhythm and blues" (or R&B); and many white artists, including Elvis Presley, acknowledged how their own style was influenced by black blues performers. This is still true even in modern times-- many white rock stars grew up listening to and admiring black blues legends like Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf. And even black pop stars like Beyoncé have found blues songs that they wanted to perform (her version of "At Last," originally done by Etta James, is a good example).
