ok well here goes. While many of this will be debatable, the facts are this. Timing, it was all about timing. the economic climate, the times in england and advertising. the sex pistols were against it all but the also benefited from it. the big bloated bands of the early 70's were all rich and disconnected. the youth of england had no connection to the hippies, artsy, ect crowd which had dwindle to nothing. music was due for an overhaul and leave it to the youth and some reggae djs to provide that. i could go on and on but the bottom line is this timing. any other time they probably wouldnt have been but the time was right for these guys and it produced so much more that we take for granted. rock t shirts, clothing, boots, piercings, mohawks, colored hair, leather, etc... they werent the best, but the first.
Punk.
Sex Pistols
Punk music is actually a contrived genre created by a Brit named Malcom McLaren who was the manager and publicist of The Sex-Pistols whose 1977 debut album "Nevermind The Bollocks: Here's The Sex-Pistols" became the prototype for English Punk. However American bands such as The Ramones, The New York Dolls, and Throbbing Gristle are historically considered to be true examples of Punk philosophically speaking and proceeded "The Pistols" by 2-3 years.
During the punk rock era of the late 70s, The Sex Pistols and The Clash famously refused to let their music be used in adverts.
That would be the Sex Pistols. Though they did not start punk, they made it what it was.

Real punk rock, not the pop punk garbage that bands like Green Day or Blink 182 write.
That band does not exist. Siouxie Sioux and the Banshees were a punk band, as were the Sex Pistols.
Punk and lots of it!! Johnny Rotten's voice was awful but it suited the type of music so well that it sounded amazing!!!!
It was just a rebellious time period, I guess. And the Sex Pistols took that rebellion and put it into music... :)
