Building a rack case starts with determining how you're going to use it. There are, IMHO, three classes of rack case: 1. Non-mobile, desktop or standalone equipment rack that allows you to organize equipment in the studio. 2. Mobile case with the ability to close and be transported to gigs but not something that you would trust in the hands of airline baggage handlers. 3. ATA flight cases. See number 2. These are what the pros use. One note, if you're in need of a case or cases like these, you're probably gigging regularly and are flying to get there. If this is what you're doing, you're probably not interested in saving money by DYI! :) To build a rack case is easy. For a lightweight case, get some 1/2" plywood, make a rectangular box with an inside dimension of 19". Purchase rack rails and screws at your local Guitar Center and simply bolt them in. Be sure to give yourself enough clearance room in front. I build my own stuff. I've built speaker cabinets, pedal boards, etc. The best thing about building it yourself is that you can create something that's specific to your needs/wants. Plus you save a ton of $$. Enjoy.
