Answer
If you want song lyrics that sound poetic, you are off to a good start with your eight years of poetry experience. You have probably noticed that most songs have a certain amount of syllables per line and also so many lines per verse. To write lyrics all you have to do is have a nice poetic rhythm, usually using the same amount of syllables in each line. Most verses have four lines each, and most choruses have four lines each. Try to follow these patterns. Also, you have to be able to read and preferably write music through notes, tabs, or chords. Also: If your having difficulty with the creation side of lyric writing then have a walk around, see what you can see. Its like writers block, look around, write about what you see. Its original this way too. The lines don't have to rhyme. But they need to be in time. Are you thinking about also playing an instrument yourself? They will have to be in the same key eg: c, g d e. I am a songwriter and I find that I get one or two lines of lyric that already have a melody. Follow the melody as the lyrics come to you - it can take days, even weeks. If you try to write lyrics without a melody, it often doesn't work. If you have a feel for music, even a basic melody and even if you don't stick to it will guide you into the pattern. Then later you can go looking for the chords and figure out how to play it. A lot of 'musos' start with four or so chords. A lot of popular songs have been written on a riff, and often they only use the same four chords all the way through. Then once they have the chords they work from there. It definitely works for some people and if that's your style then go for it. Personally I have never been able to work from chords. I need a melody and a few lines of lyrics. Once I have finished the song, then I go looking for the chords. Sometimes it takes hours. I don't care because they sound better that way.
