The first step I would suggest is to go to a music store (Ted Brown's music was the one our band instructor mentioned to us) or find a friend who plays the Flute and ask to use one of their instruments-- you wouldn't want to pay the money for a flute if you don't enjoy playing it.
Once you have a flute, the best way I found to start is to take just the head joint (it will have no keys on it, just a mouth piece) and practice getting a sound to come out. First start with your right hand over the open end. Then place your mouth with your bottom lip at the edge of the opening on the mouth piece. You want to direct your airstream over the hole-- don't worry if you don't get it the first few times, just imagine that you are blowing over a bottle to make a sound, it's the same principle. Once you can make a sound with your hand on the end, take your hand off the open end, and try to make sounds like that.
The next thing I would suggest is to try to play octaves (the 8th note above the note you are playing). Since you still only have the head piece, you won't have to worry about fingering, and we don't know what note you are playing, so you will simply tighten (slightly) your cheek/jaw muscles and blow over the hole again. What you are looking for is a higher tone than the base note you were playing before.
Once you have that step down, the best thing I can suggest is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! It might not come to you in a night, or a year, but if you practice and truly enjoy playing music, it will not only be fun, but you will have a new skill to add to your repertoire! Just remember to ask for help if you need it, and practice!
I have a Flute which is stamped Berthold Stuttgart, from my brief research I think mine is an 11 key simple system flute from around 1850. I would be interested to know anything else anyone finds out on this topic.
the piccolo has a higher pitch than a flute but a piccolo can get as silent as a flute it just depends on how good of a player you are . Any instrument can go from playing very soft to playing very loud music. Piccolos are the highest pitched instrument in a band and even if your not playing loud you can be heard over the rest of the band trust me i play the piccolo and i play very loud caz i like people to know i am playing.
Some clarinetists have abs from playing the clarinet, because of the way they have to blow.
Nope! It's the same fingerings as the flute, if you know how to play flute, you can play piccolo.
The letters on the flute are just the alphabet from A to G. I'm in band, so I know that. But I also wanted to know. Is a flute easy to learn? I mean, I don't play flute. I play clarinet. I want to start learning flute, but when I picked up my aunt's flute and looked up how to play Mary had a little lamb, I freaked. It was SO hard.
Not at all. I know from experience.
Well, playing the flute is kind of hard. So I recomend the clairinet its really fun to play.

Woodwinds! I'm a flute player, I should know o_o
There are no chords on a flute. It's impossible to play chords on only one flute. A chord is a group of notes, but flutes can only play o e note at a time. Some instruments like the piano and guitar can play chords because they have more than one "playing area" if you know what I mean. If you had 3 flutists all playing different notes at the same time, that would be a chord. But chords cannot be played on one flute alone.
