How did Ella Fitzgerald become a singer?

It was Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater and she was going to be a dancer. Then she got up on stage and she changed her mind and knew she couldn't dance in front of all those people. She had won the opportunity to do that so the judges said 'well do something' so she decided to sing. Her music influence that she tried to sing like was Connie Boswell. She talks about this in an interview she did on an episode of "Oscar Peterson & Friends".
