In 2001, Karen went in for a routine hernia surgery, and unexpected complications arose. She developed a blood clot in her lungs, and one in her legs, and then more problems arose which were the catalyst to her slipping into a coma for three and a half weeks. The doctors gave her a 2 percent chance, and as you know she recovered and is singing today, although she thought she would never be able to while she was bedridden, hence the title of her sophmore album "Second Chance".
