The band most likely borrowed the name from Pete Townshend's 1970-1971 music project of the same name, which was going to be a double-disc concept album (credited to The Who, of course), and a film incorporating live stage performances. However, I cannot verify this, as I do not know enough of the band (Lifehouse) to prove so (I am an avid Who fan and an admirer of the abandoned Lifehouse project--well, sort of abandoned, as a radio play was made in 1999 and many of the songs related to the project have been released, such as "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Baba O'Riley" and "Behind Blue Eyes"). What I want to really know is, why has no one asked them this yet?
They originally went under the name "blyss" but when they went to get it copywriter it was taken. They made a list of about eight names and lifehouse was the only one not taken. (they said they had no idea about Pete Townshed's project called lifehouse when they got the name) also in an interview the singer says he writes most of the songs based on his and others personal life experiences so the name ties in there
There is really no grand story of how the band got its name. The former name of the band is Blyss, but when it came time to record an album, they discovered a band with that name already existed. So, they made a list of band names that they liked, and Lifehouse was the only one on the list that was not already taken.
