On July 4th, 1876, Love delivered 30,000 heads of cattle to Black Hills and the n rode to Deadwood to celebrate. Later that day gamblers and miners raised prized money for roping and shooting contest. Love won both of these contests and was named Deadwood Dick.

In the spring of 1876 he was sent to deliver a herd of 3,000 steers to Deadwood South Dakota. They arrived on July 3rd just in time for the 4th of July celebration. One of the events included a cowboy contest with a 200 cash prize. Nat won the contest and was given the new nickname of Deadwood Dick.
