Ray Charles first became known around 1952 with the single "Mess Around" written by Ahmet Ertegun his producer. this is where Ray reinvented his sound using his Gospel roots he learned as a child singing in church. which upset a lot of church goers, accusing Ray of being blasphemous by using the church's style of singing; Gospel, with lyrics about sex, drugs, love and the blues. which they dubbed "the Devil's music". when confronted on stage by church goers saying such things as, "you're making money off the lord" and "you're going straight to hell!", Ray responded with a cheeky grin saying "if Y'all want me to keep play'n, give me an Amen!" to which the crowd yelled "AMEN!"
Ray Charles had two jobs before he made it big. The first was in a barbershop, sweeping up hair from the floor. The second was at Bingo's Haberdashery on 4th and River.
