A quick mind, a sharp tongue, a wicked sense of humor, a willingness to try new things, a tendency to call things as he saw them, a knack for melodies and clever lyrics, a nasal voice with a Northern English accent... a thin nose, attached earlobes, a low forehead, a chipped front tooth, and legally blind without glasses. One of his biographers called him "a rebel with a heart of gold".
Since many of Lennon's songs were about himself (by his own admission), you will find your best answer there. His songs were compulsively honest and self-reflective (and extremely self-critical at times.)
In his 1980 Playboy interview with David Sheff, Lennon said this about himself: "Part of me would like to be accepted by all facets of society and not be this loudmouth, lunatic, poet/musician. But I cannot be what I'm not."
When asked about the inspiration behind his song "I'm a Loser" later on in the same interview, he said, "Part of me suspects I'm a loser and the other part of me thinks I'm God Almighty."
In the 1970 Rolling Stone interview, Lennon said: "When I was a child, I always wondered, 'Am I crazy, or am I a genius?'...If there is such a thing as genius, I am one; and if there isn't, I don't care." Reflecting on that statement 10 years later, however, Lennon said, "I don't think I'm either: 'genius' and 'crazy' don't mean anything to me anymore."
But really, to get Lennon's best description of himself, you need to listen to his music. He held nothing back.
