People saying that screamo started in the 60's are missing a key point here, screamo is not just any music with screaming, it is emo - emotional hardcore and punk - with screaming. Of course the concept of screaming in music existed prior, but screamo did not begin until the early 90's as an offshoot of the San Diego hardcore punk movement.

Believe it or not screamo started in the 60's when a man named Sam Lee learned how to control his vocal chords in such a way that a scream sound came out. The first screamo song ever made has no guitar or drums only violin and piano it sounds a bit interesting.

Screamo Music in the first place evolved from hardcore punk, among other genres, in the early 1990s. The term "screamo" was originally applied to a more aggressive offshoot of emo that established in San Diego in 1991 at the Che Cafe, with bands like: Heroin, Swing Kids, Angel Hair, and more. These bands were influenced by Washington DC post- hardcore, straight edge, and post-punk like Joy Division and Bauhaus.

Gravity Records and Ebullition Records released this more chaotic and expressive style of hardcore. The scene was also notable for its distinctive fashion sense, inspired by mod culture. The Plot To Blow Up The Tower incorporated the style into punk-jazz. Much as emo was, the term "screamo" was always controversial in the scene.

Screamo first began in 1991 in San Diego, California, USA, at the Ché Ché Café. Groups that made it popular included Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Angel Hair, Mohinder, Swing Kids, and Portraits of Past.

The first record companies to get involved were Gravity Records and Ebullition Records.

It was started because people wanted a more aggressive form of emo music. They were also political and were reacting against the right wing Californian politicians of the time, like Roger Hedgecock.

Screamo has changed over the years and there is now a "second wave" which is slower and more reflective than the first.
