As a result these children often have difficulties functioning at their full potential in the school environment either socially, behaviorally, academically or all three. Children with personal life challenges might come to school with low self-esteem, depressed, tired or hungry - not ideal for taking in the joy of learning, the security of community and the pleasure of friendship.

Shania Twain (real name Eilleen Regina Edwards) was born in Windsor, Ontario (Canada) in 1965, and raised in Timmins, Ontario. Her fame built very gradually: she began performing when she was a young child, because her parents were always short of money and she wanted to help. By high school, she was in a band called Longshot, and after she graduated, she toured with a band called Flirt. She also took singing lessons in Toronto, where she began to do more performances. Ultimately, a country disc jockey named Stan Campbell noticed her and was impressed with her talent. He helped her to make some of the music industry contacts that she needed.

But it would not be till the early 1990s that she would begin to attract national attention both in Canada and the US. Since then, she has had a number of country and pop hits: her breakthrough album occurred in 1995-- "The Woman in Me" was produced by well-respected rock producer Mutt Lange, and it became a huge seller, from which came several major hit singles. Other hits albums and singles followed. Today, Shania Twain has sold more than 85 million album world-wide (34 million of them in the US), and remains one of the biggest-selling female country artists. She has written a number of songs, performed in concert all over the world and has also been seen on cable network VH1's Behind the Music. Those are just some of the reasons why the Canadian music industry has honored her.
