in Julian times we had the Julian calendar which had 12 months, the order was the same but the start of the year was march. February the shortest month was the last month of the year. if you look at the months you can see why some of them had their names.

December - was the 10th month - dec - 10

october - was the 8th month - oct - 8

July was actually named after Julius

august after Augustus both prominent figures in history

but we used to have a calendar which had 13 months to coincide with the amount of full moons we had in a year - the lunar cycle.
