Metallica got their name as a result of Lars Ulrich having a conversation with a fellow heavy metal fan way back in 1979 or so.His friend was setting up a fanzine(a magazine run by fans) and had two names in mind. One was Metallica ,the other was something else.Lars realising how good Metallica as a name for a band would be talked his friend into calling the fanzine the other name.Lars then went down to the copyright office and registered the name Metallica as his.And the rest as they say is history.
