It was during the war of 1812. Key was at fort McHenry near Baltimore, Maryland. He saw a British attack on he American Army. He watched as canoes boomed and blazed through the night. The next morning he wasn't sure who won . Then, he looked thorough a telescope. He spotted something a huge American Flag waving from the fort. The sight inspired Key quickly wrote the words to the star spangled banner.

For the United States of America (my country), the lyrics are "The Defense of Fort McHenry" (commonly called "The Star Spangled Banner") and were written by Francis Scott Key. The music is "To Anacreon in Heaven", a British beer hall song by John Stafford Smith. The song is called "The Star Spangled Banner". It became our National Anthem in 1931.
