Prior to radio, only the wealthy could attend a concert by a famous performer; but thanks to radio, anyone who had a set could hear a wide range of music, by some of the biggest names. In America, which was still segregated, radio made it possible for black performers to be heard in cities where their actual presence might not have been welcomed. It made national stars out of local entertainers, and helped create national hit songs. Radio also affected politics-- now the candidates had to become effective public speakers, so they would sound friendly and intelligent for the listening audience.
