There are three common ways people gain weight:

Significant overeating is likely to lead to weight gain.

A lack of exercise may do the same.

Some drugs have weight gain as a side effect.

None of these are generally healthy. If you are trying to gain weight, eat more, but make sure that you eat whole foods (unprocessed foods where the nutrients have not been drastically reduced). Ironically, many people who overeat also have deficiencies in certain nutrients because they do not eat a balanced diet of whole foods.

Regardless of whether you are trying to lose, gain, or maintain weight, an adult or teen should always have a minimum of 4 servings of vegetables, 4 servings of fruits, 6 servings of grain, and 3 servings of milk or other, relatively unprocessed dairy foods (ice cream, sadly, has almost none of the original product's health value).

Healthy foods to gain weight (as long as they are unprocessed) include:

Nuts, especially almonds

Fruits, especially avocados (yes, they're fruit!) which are high in healthy fats

Any whole grain products such as bread, black rice, or quinoa (try not to have too much breakfast cereal, as there may be health risks to this)

There are of course many others, but you can find those out on your own easily enough.

Cooking is your friend! Many nutritious foods that would be unappetizing on their own are quite delicious in a recipe. Look for healthy recipes online. It is also easier to consume more calories quickly and enjoyably in a recipe than it would be to eat the raw materials.

Don't eat too much salt, simple sugar, or saturated fat, all of which have health consequences. Complex carbohydrates (generally referred to simply as "Carbohydrates" on a Nutrition label) are good.

Finally, have many snacks and smaller meals. The breaks between eating ensure that you aren't too full to eat.

Using these tips, you will have a reasonably healthy diet and can expect to gain weight at a healthy pace.
