If the question is how to check your alternator on a 2000 Honda accord is by starting your car and disconnect your battery if the car is still running for max 3 mins you know your alternator is good.

Take it to the local Advance Auto Parts store. They test it for FREE, on or off the car. The best method is to take it off because then the alternator is isolated from the wiring, but either way they should be able to tell you good or bad. They also test batteries, starters, and charging systems for FREE! Why do you believe the alternator is bad?

Generally a charging system that is not charging will trip a trouble light. To see if your vehicle has one, look at all dash lights with key on engine off, they should all illuminate for a few seconds and then blink off-generally charging system has one of it's own. if yours has one that does not say on, that is a good sign. You can also check batt voltage with a voltmeter (very cheap any auto parts store) check voltage not running at posts, then start vehicle and carefully check while running-you will see an increase (if charging). Another method is touching back of alt case with a screwdriver to see if attracted to it (generating magnetic field) this method is not foolproof and you have to be careful to not touch any wires/contacts. Another method is to loosen a terminal, then remove while running-if vehicle stays running alternator is supplying power for ignition (this last method is risky for some computer controlled vehicles)

Borrow or purchase a digital voltmeter. Open the hood and connect + and - leads from volt meter to battery. Before starting vehicle, battery voltage should read 12.68. If the battery reads less than this the battery needs to be recharged first before finishing test. Once you have a 12.68 volt reading, with leads still connected start vehicle and let idle with no accessories on. The volt meter should be reading 14 to 14.5 volts. Anything less indicates a weak or bad alternator.
