With a bow, or plucked.
You could start by getting lessons. There is more than one style on the bass, styles include Jazz, Rockabilly, Classical. Often reffered as String bass, Contra Bass, Stand up bass, Double Bass. Pizzicato is a plucking technique, Arco means to use your bow, There is a French bow and a German bow. I'd start by playing with a bow, learning scales and your positions on the finger board. Mostly used for walking in jazz.
Of the modern orchestral strings, the string bass or double bass has the largest bow, but not the longest. While the wooden part of the bow is much larger (nearly twice the diameter) of a violin bow, and the hair "ribbon" is wider and thicker with heavier hair, the violin bow is longer. The bass bow is heavier because it needs to have more weight behind it to move the heavy strings on the bass. It is short because the player does not bend his arm like the smaller instruments, and has a smaller range of motion across the strings. This is not a big problem, because the dynamics of bowing let the bass player move the bow more slowly across the strings and thus can get just as long a note as violinists can with their longer bows.
You can play the Double Bass either arco. (which is with a bow) or pizzicato (which is plucking the strings).
Because the double bass is the largest instrument in the orchestra.

It isn't. A violin bow is longer than a bass bow, although the bass bow has is much wider with a thicker wooden shaft, and is thus two or three times heavier. Violin bows are longer because the higher in pitch a string is, the faster bow you need. Basses have very thick strings, so they don't need to move their bows very fast, and don't need as long a bow. Besides, if it were as long as a violin bow, it would be too heavy for most people to play!

You can fingerpick using your....fingers or pick it using a plectrum/pick. Alternatively you can even pluck it or use a bow on something like a double bass.
Bow sights can be purchased at most stores that sell bows. Cabela's, Bass Pro Shop, Amazon, and Midway USA all sell sights that can be used for bow hunting.
