Size is measured in a few different ways. The width of the neck which would have to do with how many strings the bass has 4 being the most common. Also size is measured by how many frets the bass has. The more strings the wider the more frets the longer.
Technically the measurement I presume you want is called the SCALE LENGTH - this is the distance between the BRIDGE (the last place on the body which the strings actually touch before travelling towards the neck) and the NUT (the corresponding part at the top of the neck below the tuners, usually made from plastic, bone or metal). Occasionally the neck will have a ZERO FRET - a thin raised metal strip about a quarter of an inch in front of the nut, in which case this should be counted as the end point.
Bass Guitars tend to be short-scale (29.5" - 30"), medium-scale (32") or long-scale, also known as full-scale (33.5" - 34"). Occasionally beginners' or children's instruments will have an extra-short scale, and some extended-range basses have a 35" or even a 36" scale length for a better response from extra-thick strings.
