Using a good quality string cleaner after you play and washing your hands before you play will increase the life of your strings. Oxidized strings are another matter, sort of. Oxidization happens more rapidly with moisture high humidity. Using silica bags, the little packs found in boxes of items shipped, will absorb moisture and help keep you guitar in the case dry. The reality is if your strings are oxidized after you've put them on your guitar, they've been on far to long anyway. Strings should be changed regularly, depending on how much you play. Some players change them every few weeks and some a few times per year some even wait until they break of natural causes. Once per years is, in my professional opinion, way to long. Once every three months is possibly acceptable for a casual player.
