I got a metal rubbish can and pulled the bottom out. then i stretched some cowhide over it. (I live On A farm so it wasnt so hard to get some. try thin leather instead)

Yes if you don't connect it, your pedal will slide around. I'm assuming that you know how to connect it. But if not, You place the bass drum on top of the little platform and you have a lug on your pedal, you tighten this pretty much as tight as you can. Your bass drum pedal is officially SECURE!
