on a soprano recorder, there are two f's. The lower one is played by closing thumb and three fingerholes of the left hand and closing the first and third finger holes of the right hand (first being index finger, third being ring finger.) On some recorders, the fourth finger hole must be closed or shaded to get the note in tune.
The upper f on soprano is fingered exactly the same way, except that the thumbhole is slightly opened (called "pinching" by recorder players.)
On the alto recorder, 3 f's can be played: the lowest requires closing all the holes.
The middle F is played by closing the thumbhole and middlefingerhole of the left hand and no other holes. The highest f is played with the thumbhole pinched (very nearly closed) and the first two fingerholes of the left hand closed, while the right hand only closes the first fingerhole. Often, for a beginner, it is easier to get to this note if one starts with the E below it: same left hand, but the first two fingers of the right hand. Once this speaks clearly, removing the middle finger of the right hand should let the f sound. Tongue this note and adjust the thumb pinch until it comes out easily, then practice going directly to that note without the intermediate e!
