The Bb scale will start on a C with three fingers down on the top hand with the thumb pressing the key with the top hand as well and it will rise to the C that is only the thumb on the top hand and the register key. The scale goes: C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C.

E below the staff (concert D) at the bottom.

Technically there is no true "highest note" but you wont see it written higher then the A twice above the staff (concert G) it is on top of the 4th added ledger line above the staff

B flat concert is easy because all you have to do is keep playing until it sounds right and then go back down. With other scales just follow the key signature, playing the same sharps and flats. The book; Foundations For Superior Performance is a great for that though because it has them all in there.

its quite easy. For beginners, start with the E flat (F) key (lowest octave)and vertically up until you reach the E flat (F) left thumb key. then you play upwards(the A flat(B flat) key is the G Key(A key) with the register key) and skip to the same B flat(C) key(missing the A(B) key) and play upwards till the E flat(F) key in the middle octave.

I know it is a bit confusing but there you have it, 2 octaves. For slightly better players (?9 months of experience?) you can try the altissimo range.

PS the bracketed letters are the Clarinet fingering letters.

It's above your left thumb. It's actually called the register key, but octave key also works.

Can all the scales a-g be played on a flute or piccolo?

Every scale can be played on bother the flute and the piccolo. On the flute you can play the A, A flat, B, B flat, D, G, F sharp, and F two octaves. For the C and the D flat there are three that can be played without a Low B key. If you have a low B key, you can play the B scale three octaves. On the piccolo it is the same (minus there is no such thing as a low B key for a piccolo) and the C and high d flat thrid octaves take a lot of effort and practice to get out.

Why is a clarinet in b flat key?

The Bb Clarinet is the most common type of clarinet. The Bb shows that the clarinet is tuned to that note, just like an Eb clarinet is tuned to an Eb. If a Bb clarinet and a flute both play an "A" the notes will sound different, because they are tuned to different notes. In order to make the notes sound the same, the Bb Clarinet must play a semitone up, which is a "Bb".
