According to the Service manual for that year you need to remove the compressor shaft bolt. A band-type oil filter wrench may be used to hold the assembly still. Once the bolt is removed, tap the clutch plate with a plastic or non-metal hammer to disloodge the plate from the splines on the compressor shaft. Now you should see the pulley. There is a snap-ring holding it on. Use a pair of straight-tip pliers to remove the ring. The pulley should be able to come off at this point.

The fan and clutch are fastened to a pulley with a large size hex nut which you will see directly behind the fan (toward the back of the vehicle). The trick here is to get a wrench on that nut and try to loosten it counter clockwise while holding the pulley steady with a 'special tool'. The problem here is that even with the special tool it's difficult to do. What I did was take the vehicle to a local shop and asked them to loosen it. The mechanic did it with a special air wrench attachment and it didn't look too easy. Once the fan/clutch assembly is removed from the vehicle you will find it easy to transfer the fan to the new clutch and reattach the assembly to the pulley without special tools. Good luck.

1. Recover refrigerant properly.

2. Remove serpentine belt.

3. Remove air cleaner box-- must remove 3 nuts from below. Bolts are captive with rubber

bushings.

4. Disconnect steering shaft at U-joint. Retract it toward firewall and set it to the side.

5. Remove refrigerant lines from compressor.

6. Disconnect connector for electric clutch (slide red lock, push unlock tab at rear of connector).

7. Disconnect supports (top and bottom of engine) for refrigerant lines (just gives them more wiggle

room).

8. Remove 3 mounting bolts from compressor. When it drops down, also remove mounting bracket

from side of engine.

9. Compressor can now be manipulated to be removed.

Installation of new compressor is the reverse. Replace O-rings on lines, etc. Make sure to not connect

clutch connector until after system is properly charged with refrigerant and oil.
