Without knowing to what manufacturer or model Bass Guitar you are referring, generally there should be no difficulty in removing the control cavity cover other than by unscrewing usually four small screws. You may need a small object as jewelers screwdrivers to say, pop the cover up by the sides, if it is a tight fit. Once open, be aware of the fine wires as the possibility of breaking one while probing around.
If you are changing a battery, just put a new one in, leave the wires alone or let a professional guide you through the insides.
