How do you tell how long your violin would need to be?

For students who are trying to determine which size violin to play, pick up the violin and place it on your shoulder and under your left jaw as you would normally play. Your left fingers should be able to curl around the scroll, and still have bend in your elbow. This is very important. Your arm should not be straight out, don't strain to curl your fingers around the scroll.

It depends on how big you are. Generally, adults and high school aged students use 4/4 violins. 6-8 grade students may use 4/4, or 3/4 size violins, and 3-4 grade students tend to use 3/4 or 1/2 size violins. There are even smaller violins for younger/smaller people. The main idea is to make sure the violin is small enough that player's elbow is comfortably bent while the violin rests on the left side of the jaw and the fingers curl around the finger board in first position (the end of the fingerboard farthest from the player.

You have to check if the violin sounds good or not before buying it and make sure there are no cracks in it.

Also, you want to make sure that it is the right size for you. To make sure that you have the right violin size, place your hand over the scroll of the violin. If you feel like you are stretching to get to it, the violin is a size too big. If you can easily put your hand over the scroll, covering it completely with your hand and you aren't even trying to stretch, then you should move to a larger sized violin.

You don't choose a violin. It chooses you. I looked around a store with 300 or so violins, and I knew which two i wanted. One was 700, the other was 300, so i got the three hundred dollar one. Ever time i open the case, i have to catch my breath. It is my most prized possesion.

You hold the instrument as if you were going to play. Then you stretch your arm to see if you can reach your hand around the scroll (the decorative end), if you can then it is too small .You cant tell by the size of your arm because the hand might affect the measurement.
