That depends what you mean by "tapping." If you're referring to Eddie van Halen-style two-hand tapping, it's sort of difficult to explain in text. (Hammer-ons and pull-offs could theoretically be grouped with "tapping," but I expect that's not what you mean.) At its simplest, one picks two tones three or four frets apart between which to alternate with his fretting hand; for instance, one might pick E (at the 12th fret) and G (at the 15th fret). Fretting the E, he then taps the B (at the 19th fret) with his right hand, then hammers the G. Tap the B, then hammer up to the G; increasing speed will generate that neat tapping sequence (and generate a sort of Em arpeggio). You can move the pattern up and down the neck as desired to create different arpeggios and tonal constructs. (As noted, it's really much easier to show someone how to do this.) .............................................................................................................. There is a very helpful video on www.YouTube.com just search guitar tapping. I myself a self-taught guitarist found it highly helpful

Eddie Van Halen polularized this tech. Basically with your fret hand you will hold a root fret with one finger and alternate tapping the string with another finger of the fret hand and a finger of the pick hand. There are many variations and styles that can be used but that is the basics.

Supposedly you have already learnt how to do pull-offs and hammer-ons, you just have to extend that. Take your picking hand and "tap" a fret. Then pull it off. By the time you have done this, you should have your fretting hand lower down. Once you have taken your tapping hand off the fretboard, pull off a note lower down. You should have now played 3 notes. Learn to do this quickly and you will become a great tapper!

PS. There are many useful videos all over the net for this!

Tapping, or "hammering" is a term for a technique often used by lead Guitarists. The technique requires a high amount of distortion for the best effect. It is the method of holding a note while the picking finger "taps" hard on frets further up the neck to hammer a higher note, followed by a quick release to the held note. Doing this in quick succession while often changing notes with the left hand and tapping different notes with the right hand produces a rapid arpeggio effect that sounds like twice the amount of notes are being played when in fact only half actually are.

2 notes played by tap and release. It is not very difficult to tap 4 frets while also shifting 4 notes with the left hand. This produces 8 rapid notes. Test yourself... you can do 280 notes in 30 seconds (well, for me anyway).
