take out the tuning slide which is the one that the spit comes out of and take some of the slide grease and put it on, making sure it's rubbed in completely. Put the slide back on and push it in and out a few times so you can get the grease rubbed in. You should feel it getting easier to slide as you do this.

Normally when I would buy slide grease for my Trumpet, I would be given the same stuff that the Trombone players use for their slides. It would be safe to assume that they are the same basic materials.

ANS2:Not unless you like to play v e r y s l o w l y...tuning slide grease is very viscous and your slide will drag. If you are out of slide oil, you can use valve oil. Some trumpet players use trombone slide oil on their valves...there is little difference between it and valve oil. You can use valve or slide oil and a cloth to remove the grease if you have already messed up your slide.

Be sure not to get the cloth stuck in the slide by using nylon chalk line with a weight on the end instead of cotton string. Been there, done that...not fun. You might be able to pull out the cloth with a .36 caliber ball puller and a ramrod for a muzzle-loading rifle if you didn't lose the cloth in the crook.

If you put valve oil on your tuning slide, it will sometimes cause it to become so slick that it will fall right out.

Trumpet players sometimes use oil on the 3rd valve slide and put a pinkie ring in the lyre mount so they can tweak the tuning when playing non-standard fingerings that involve the 3rd valve. Some trumpets even have triggers for the 1st and 3rd valves...those would get oil instead of grease.

Don't do it. Slide grease is too thick to use on valves.
