The Phantom ends up trying to make Christine commit to a marriage with him, by threatning to kill Raoul if she won't do so just like in the novel - but in the ALW stage version, The Phantom has trapped Raoul in a hangman's noose and in the film version he ties Raoul to the gate of his lair and puts a lassoo around his neck in means to stranggle Raoul if Christine refuses to marry him (the Phantom.) There's a few moments of huge drama between the trio and eventually Christine chooses the Phantom. She puts on the engagement ring and gives the Phantom two kisses on the lips. Her love, sacrifice and commitment has the Phantom's human side win and he learns the true meaning of love; and thus because he loves Christine, he lets Raoul and Christine go. The Phantom tells Christine the three words ('I love you'), she gives him back the engagement ring and she and Raoul leave. In the stage version, the Phantom weeps into her wedding veil, chanting her name or alternatively 'I love you' and then either dies or disappears. In the film version it's the same except the wedding veil moment has been changed into him breaking a few mirrors in anguish.
