It is, in essence, an electronic keyboard on its side with a strap. That's it, basically. Some may have gizmos and gadgets that can be controlled by the left hand on the neck, so the sound can be modulated and changed as you play.

Nadaddy from Family Force 5 has played a keytar but I wouldnt say they are a metal band, kinda hardcore though.
