A Melodica contains a set of reeds, one reed for each note/key that can be pressed.

It is basically the same idea as a harmonica, except with a keyboard.

An air pipe or mouth-piece connects to the instrument and allows air to enter a chamber from the players mouth. Upon pressing a key, the chamber is opened up to a smaller chamber where the reed sets, allowing air to pass through the reed making sound.

The types of action inside a Melodica vary.

The biggest enemy of this instrument is rust. Since the reeds are often made of low quality metal, the instrument can not be expected to last long unless you go with a higher quality "professional" version. If you plan to build one, attempt to find higher quality reeds made of a non-rusting metal so that your creation can last and be worthwhile.
