The pickups are magnetic. The strings are made out of nickel and/or steel - magnetic metals.

When the strings vibrates above the pickups it creates a small electrical current. This passes down to the cable to the amplifier where it's amplified and created into sound via speaker.

"sound" as we all know is simply vibrations. keep that in mind while i answer your question. the little things on your guitar right under where you strum are called "Pickups". they have little circles that are called pole pieces. they are actually magnets that PICK UP the vibrations of your strings when you strum. they are then passed through a series of things, through your amp jack and to the amplifier which is pretty much just a speaker. so yeah the pickups are the first step in your sound getting from your guitar to your amp. hope this helps - Kyse

Electric Guitars have six-poled magnetic coils called pickups. When the string is played, an electric pulse is sent through the cooresponding pole and through the guitar cable to the amplifier, where the very low level pulse can be amplified to audible (or even painful) levels.

vibrations come from striking the strings which gets picked up by the magnets inside the guitars pickups , hence the term "pickup" and it transfers to the guitars potentiometers (knobs) , goes into the pickup selector through one wire in the pickup and out of the guitar , through a cable and to your amplifier.
