When you play a note, the tuner picks it up and usually has little lights, and a needle to tell you if you need to tune it down or up. If it is plug in it takes sound in from a cable. If it is not it just picks up anything around it

*To use an electric tuner you have to turn it to the "on" position.

*Some tuners have a 1/4" jack input. Plug one end of the cable into your instrument and plug the other end into your tuner. This is to only get the pitch of the note you hit, without getting background noise like people talking.

*Then when you play a single note, tune that note to the desired pitch.

*It's pretty Easy.

Plug one end of a patch cable into your guitar and the other into the tuner. Start with the open E string, repeating the note every few seconds to keep it ringing. Then if the tuner says it is flat (too low) turn the key clockwise until you meet the pitch.

If the string is sharp (too high) then then the key counter clockwise until it is flat, then go back up to the correct pitch. You always want to go from flat to in-tune.

Then you can continue with the other five strings in the same manner.

Troubleshooting: Make sure the volume knob on your guitar is turned up, but not too high. Also make sure that your tuner is set on guitar and not bass.

Hope I helped!

the proper way to play is if a Guitars in tune, that way every string can do something different. A tuner makes sure that your guitar stays in tune.

how you know its out of tune is if it sounds weird if you play something and it sounds different from yesterday, having a tuned guitar makes it easier to write and remember music as every day when you'd pick up an untuned guitar it would be impossible to really remember.

when does a guitar go out of tune? try to tune every week or so depending on how good the guitar is, price doesn't apply to this but, some stay in tune longer than others.

You find the notes E A D G B E in that order (from lowest thickest string to highest). Some kind of indicator will usually tell you the nearest note and how far off you are, find E, then find A and so on.

Once you have the first E done, you can double check if you need to go higher or lower by playing the fifth fret of the string and then play the open 5th (A) string the one next to it. This applies for all strings except the tuned third. When you want to find the note of the second string you play the fourth fret, not the third.

How do I tune a guitar?

Either by sound (buy a tuning harmonica) or by electronic (buy a guitar tuner) The best and most accurate way is to buy a tuner. You can either put it up to your guitar and let it go on sound or plug it into any electric based guitar to get 100% quality tune. I have an effects peddle and there is a tuner feature included in that. So I killed 2 birds with 1 stone. I agree that electronic is best. The tuning harmonicas are funny more than effective.

Can you tune a banjo with a guitar tuner?

You can use a pitch pipe to get the right notes. But the tuning and order of the strings is different. For a guitar it is E A D G B E. For a violin it is G D A E. You could tune the guitar's A string using the violin tuner and then tune the rest from the A. Could be there's an octave's difference, though.
