I am going to give the simplified explaination: Sound is made of waves, these waves are cut into records as grooves. Based on the amplitude and frequency, the groove changes. A needle runs in this groove and transfers the vibrations to a diaphragm. From here a preamp picks up the sound and amplifies it to a level that is reasonable for the stereo to reproduce. The stereo amplifies this signal to whatever volume your choose.

The authoritative vinyl site GEMM recommends that to avoid warping you always store vinyl records vertically, never sideways, horizontally. Each vinyl record should be stored in a resealable (preferably clear) plastic sleeve. The best of these are made in Japan. There are various sources for these but a good source is Far West Record Supply in Glendora California. Their phone number is

Phone: 01 (626) 335-5544 (no website or email, tell her Roger from Vinyl Outpost sent you)

If storing in a garage or storage unit and you don't have shelves then buy stackable plastic totes. Make sure they're big enough to store the vinyl well without warping them or crunching the corners. Also, the vinyl gets pretty heavy so make sure the totes can handle a lot of weight. Vinyl records can be a pain to store. Collecting them can get addicting and they can take up a lot of room. But like they saying goes, "no pain, no gain". Happy hunting...

When you hear sounds, you are actually feeling vibrations against your ear drum. Organs in your head turn those vibrations into sounds.

A vinyl record has a number of bumps in the grooves. A needle fits down in the grooves. Every time it hits a bump it vibrates. An amplifier amplifies those vibrations and sends them out through a speaker or earphones. Those vibrations make your eardrum vibrate.

Basically sound vibrations were carried along and tranferred to the soft vinyl through means of a needle.

The record carries small grooves over which the needle passes. As it vibrates up and down, it transmits this vibration to the player, which amplifies it into a loud enough sound to be heard.
